CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

Penny Hayes

As I zipped up my black dress in my bedroom, I caught Dillon checking me out. “Hey, what are you looking at?”

“The most beautiful woman in the world,” he replied with a sweet smile. “I… I’m sorry about your friend’s son. How old was he?”

“Twenty-six, I think. He just got married and had a baby on the way. It doesn’t get any more tragic than that.”

“Damn… that sucks.”

I turned to face him while relaxing on the bed. “So… do you think you could come to the funeral with me today? Normally, Lainey would come pick me up, but we haven’t talked. It’ll be strange to be there and not sit with her.”

“Well, I mean, I didn’t know the guy or his mom. I’d probably feel out of place.”

“Maybe not. There’s uh… one of those luncheon things after the service at Beth’s house. I bet Sydney Hart will be there. It would be great for you to meet her. Oh, and there’s a TikTok influencer named Ava. Maybe she could help you go viral.”

A strange expression emerged on Dillon’s face as he grabbed a pillow and clutched it to his chest. “Um… look… the truth is. The last funeral I went to was my mom’s and it messed me up. It was just the two of us my whole life and when she died… I don’t think I can go with you.”

I went to him. “Of course. I understand. I had no idea you lost your mom. I’m so sorry.”

“Thanks,” he replied and hung his head.

“What about your dad? Is he alive? Are you close?”

“I don’t like to talk about it, but I was adopted, so I never knew my bio dad.”

“Wow. No wonder losing your mom was so tough. Have you ever thought about searching for your biological parents?”

With a sigh of annoyance, he got up and moved away from me. “Yeah, so I can’t have this conversation. I’m gonna bounce. I need to hit the gym.”

“Dillon, hey, what just happened? Did I piss you off?”

“No, babe. It’s not you. It’s me. I’ll meet you back here tonight?”

“Sure. I have a feeling I’ll be wiped out by the time I get home. I don’t think I’ll want to be alone.”

He planted a soft kiss on my forehead. “You’re not alone. You’ve got me.”

Did I? Did I have Dillon? Why did I sense he was a mystery, wrapped in a riddle with something to hide?
